Sarah Maney has been an educator for 11 years. Prior to joining the PREP teaching team last year, she taught 9th thru 12th grade English both in a public school setting and through TTU K-12’s online program. Prior to joining the staff of TTU K-12, Sarah served as the Assistant Director of Admissions at Texas Tech University where she oversaw the entire admissions process from application to admit.  In addition to teaching, she also owns a small business specializing in home décor and design.  Sarah is a proud Red Raider, graduating from Texas Tech University with a degree in English. Sarah loves literature and is a gifted writer. She also loves to see her students get excited about seeing literature come to life, sharing their words through writing, and broadening their world view. Sarah and her husband, Paul, moved to the Cypress area about 7 years ago. They have 2 kids, a dog, and 5 fish. The Maneys attend Bayou City Fellowship and are very active in the Cypress community through various sports and outreach programs.

American Literature is a college-preparatory literature / /survey course. The works we read in this course, including novels, short / /stories, and poems, have been selected for literary quality and for their place / /in the historical development of literature. Students will gain an / /understanding of the development of American literature and will practice the / /skills of close literary analysis through essays and discussion. We will / /examine the worldviews of both the authors and their times and how this shaped / /their writing.

This course will cover a large section of American literature / /beginning with the colonial times to the present.  We will read authors such as Fitzgerald, / /Hawthorne, Poe, and Bradbury are among the authors we will read.  Students will read closely, think carefully, / /critically & analytically, and discuss thoroughly. This prepares them to write / /beautifully and persuasively.

Our writing focus will be on literary analysis which will be / /done through short response essays to a full research paper. Tests include / /short quizzes each week, unit finals, and semester finals.

Shakespeare, Eli Wiesel, and Amy Tan will be among the / /authors we read. Writing a research paper will be the focus of this year’s / /writing. Building from the ground up, we will lay a solid foundation of how to / /collect and organize information, how to structure the paper, and how to / /present it using MLA style.
