This class includes structured writing, grammar, and literature. It is / /designed for advanced fourth graders, on-level fifth graders, and as / /reinforcement for sixth graders.

After learning to write a basic paragraph, the students will learn to / /use it in many different ways. They will then advance to parts-ordered / /paragraphs and two-paragraph papers. The writing curriculum, created by the / /teacher from several sources, will be provided. Most writing and journal / /assignments will be based on the currently read novels. Students will be taught / /to write from a Biblical worldview, and every class will begin with a / /devotional.

/ / The text for grammar, Easy Grammar Grade / /5, is an excellent introduction to grammar or a complement to any other / /grammar program. Students will complete and parents will grade the workbook at home. Quizzes and short tests will be taken in class and graded by the / /teacher. Longer tests will be administered by a parent at home and returned to / /the teacher for grading.

/ / The novels for this class are Caleb’s / /Story by Patricia MacLachlan, Johnny / /Texas by Carol Hoff, Caddie Woodlawn  by Carol Ryrie Brink, The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis, Little House on the Prairieby Laura Ingalls Wilder,  and Amos Fortune, Free Man by Elizabeth Yates. Students will read four or five chapters a / /week and answer questions about the reading. Spelling tests are not included in / /this class. Vocabulary is included in two book units.

/ / Students should expect to spend forty-five minutes to one hour a day on / /homework, which is given in a daily lesson plan format. During the first / /semester, they will be required to write neatly in ink and in cursive. For the / /rest of the year, they will need to know basic word processing.

/ / A complete Book and Supply List will be emailed as soon as the class has / /made. Parental involvement is required and very important.  Parents are expected to read the Class Work / /and Homework pages in order to give their students accurate guidance.  Lessons are emailed in advance of each class / /to be printed at home and brought to class. Therefore, having convenient access to a dependable computer, a working printer, paper, / /and ink is required. Please consider this class as a commitment for the entire / /school year.

/ / Prerequisites: the ability to write / /legibly in ink and in cursive with very few mistakes, basic word processing, / /and a basic understanding of sentence structure.

/ / Cost is $450/year or $45/ten months, Aug.-May.  A two-month drop fee will be charged after / /Sept. 30. The non-refundable $10 supply fee is payable upon registration and / /reserves a spot in class. Class minimum is 6; maximum is 12. Class minimum must / /be reached by August 5. Class begins on August 26, 2020.
