Course description: This class includes structured writing, grammar, and literature. After learning how to write a basic paragraph, the students will learn how to use it in many different ways. They will then advance to parts-ordered paragraphs and two-paragraph papers. The writing curriculum, created by the teacher from several sources, will be provided. Students will be taught to write from a Biblical worldview.

/The text for grammar, Easy Grammar Grade 5, works as an excellent introduction to grammar or a complement to any other grammar program. Parents will need to purchase the Student Workbook ($13.95) and the Student Test Booklet ($4.95). They are available on-line at www.easygrammar.com or at the Home School Store here in Houston.

/The literature for this class has not yet been chosen, however, students will read approximately six novels. (Titles being considered are Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan, Charlotte?s Web by E.B White, Johnny Texas by Carol Hoff, Amos Fortune, Free Man by Elizabeth Yates, and others.) Many writing assignments will be based on the reading, but there will not be vocabulary quizzes in this class.

/Students should expect to spend forty-five minutes to one hour a day on homework, which is given in a daily lesson plan format. During the first semester, they will be required to write in cursive and in ink. For the rest of the year, they need to know basic word processing. Parental involvement is very important. Please consider this class a commitment for the entire school year.
