I completed 17 years as a home / /school mom May 2010 when my son, the youngest of two children, graduated from / /home. My daughter also graduated from home and is now living in Houston.  / /I have had the distinct honor of teaching with PREP / /Classes  since our first year in / /1995.  I first taught Spanish to a group of families at Bear Creek / /Community Church in 1994; These same families formed PREP Classes the very next / /year.  I guess you could say I was with PREP Classes before there was a / /PREP Classes. I am second / /generation American and I grew up in a home where Spanish was and is the main / /language spoken.  I learned / /English in first grade right along with learning Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmetic.  I took Spanish in high school and / /began to realize how it helped me with English.  I love it when I can teach a student / /something in Spanish that turns on a light about English grammar.  At UT I was able to test out of my / /required semesters of foreign language. In / /my PREP classes, I try to teach Spanish with a missionary emphasis because I / /know firsthand the difference a bilingual person can make in reaching the lost / /for Christ. As a child, I learned about Jesus from ladies, who spoke very / /little Spanish, at the First Baptist Church in my little town.  I will forever be grateful to them. I am very excited to announce that a / /former student who majored in education and is a Spanish teacher at a local / /high school. In Spring of 2015 one of my Spanish 3 students took the / /Spanish AP exam and passed it.  I / /also have several former students who decided to minor in Spanish, and many / /other of my students report gaining college credits through placement / /tests.  A few years back, I / /had a student who had not been in my classes for 2 years and when he took the / /placement test at Lone Star, he tested out of 3 levels of Spanish. I love teaching the students the home / /school community has entrusted to me and hope they develop a lifelong reason / /for using the language.  This / /year I will again be teaching Elementary and Jr. High students. Before my / /sister, Gloria Smith, taught those courses, I was the teacher.  I am having so much fun looking though / /the material for those age groups. I / /want my students to find a real reason for learning this language, because that / /is what will help them be well on their way to being fluent in the second most / /spoken language in the United States and fourth most spoken language in the / /World.

Teacher's Classes

This class is equivalent to the first half of my High School Spanish 1 class. / /

/ /This high-school level class will develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities through a variety of different activities. The students learn about Hispanic culture, they answer comprehension questions, all while learning the relevant vocabulary and structures. They apply and retain what they learn in a variety of formats. My goal is for the students to acquire a basic foundation for communicating in Spanish. Although this may be just a first year class, when I work with the students my goals are always long-term: To help them become fluent. / /

/ /Students journal about their day-to-day life, in Spanish, to practice what they are learning. We play games in class, eat Hispanic foods, and even sing songs ? all as a way to reinforce and enjoy learning together. Because I grew up in a Mexican home and am a fluent speaker, I desire to communicate not just the nuts and bolts of the language, but its practical use in everyday life. / /

/ /New this year: Online component! In order to provide additional ways to interact with and take advantage of the material, we will be using both online and in-class instruction. Students will meet with me once a week in class where new grammar and vocabulary will be introduced. Their homework will be a combination of traditional and online assignments. I will use the internet for: quizzes, some workbook exercises, listening activities, flash cards, and games. With such a variety of activities, students will listen to the language and write it on a daily basis. Students will still take some tests and quizzes at home- the paper and pencil kind - administered by parents. I?m excited about the opportunity to provide even more ways for your child to review and practice. / /

This high-school level class will develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities through a variety of different activities.

Because I grew up in a Mexican home and am a fluent speaker, I desire to communicate not just the nuts and bolts of the language, but its practical use in everyday life. / /

/ /Online component! Games, worksheets, and conversation starters will be other methods used to get students speaking the language. Very little time will be spent writing or learning grammar. / /

I will be / /teaching your student using Proficiency Oriented Language Instruction.  As a language teacher my goal is for your / /student to be more proficient in the target language (Spanish) when they / /complete my course than when they began.

/ /
/ / LISTENING: listening to the teacher / /tell a story, listening to questions asked by the teacher, listening to the / /teacher describe a film
/ /
/ / READING: choral reading with the / /class, reading stories that have been told/asked in class, embedded reading, / /reading storyboards

/ /
/ / SPEAKING: responding to simple / /questions from the teacher (yes/no, either/or, etc.), re-telling class stories, / /reacting with rejoinders
/ /
/ / Don’t worry, there will be plenty of fun.  Think….puzzles, games, challenges, singing / /and so much more!
/ /
/ / To support each of these 4 elements during the week, I / /assign homework so that ideally the student is using one or two of the 4 / /elements daily.  At times what I assign / /requires using online sites such as:  Señor / /Wooly, Quizlet, Quizizz and some specific videos on YouTube.

/ /
/ / In the Spanish 1 Class, I will concentrate on the Super 7 / /Verbs and then expand that list to the Sweet 16 Verbs. First semester will concentrate strongly on / /this list of verbs:

/ /

1.     estar (is at a place / is feeling)

/ /

2.     hay (there is / there are)

3.     tener (has)

14.  saber(to know)

/ /

15.  venir(to come)

/ /

16.  ver(to see)

/ /

Don’t worry, even in Spanish 1 there will be plenty of / /fun.  Think…. puzzles, games, challenges, / /singing and so much more!
/ /

I will be using a Curriculum called SOMOS as the backbone / /of my course.  By the second semester, the students will read a novel as part of the course (this could possibly / /happen in first semester).  Students / /enrolled for the full year will be using the language with only some explicit / /grammar instructions.  I know that sounds / /foreign (pun intended) but as I mentioned at the beginning, I want to teach / /this class as immersion rather than the traditional vocabulary and grammar / /based course.   Is there / /memory work?  YES, but the lists are / /short.  Some of the grammar concepts the / /students will use are: present tense, past tense (preterite and imperfect), / /present progressive, reflexive verbs, articles (definite and indefinite), / /adjectives, direct and indirect object pronouns, telling time and at what time.
/ /
/ / To support learning Spanish during the week, I assign / /homework so that ideally the student is using Spanish daily.  Some assignments will require using online / /sites such as: Señor Wooly, FlipGrid, EdPuzzle, Quizlet, Quizizz and some / /specific videos on YouTube.
/ /
/ / ONLINE LAB:  In / /addition to class time, I will require a weekly online lab time for 30-45 / /minutes for the entire class together.  I / /propose Thursday evenings at 8 pm for this lab time ; if at all possible please / /leave that time slot open in your student’s schedule.  If this time is not possible for your / /student, please call me and we will discuss this; do not let this lab time stop / /you from signing up for the class.

My goal is to make Spanish engaging, fun, and challenging for / /your student. The most important thing for the students to discover is that / /learning another language is fun and will be useful throughout their lives. / /They are encouraged to participate without hesitation in an environment that is / /supportive and open to experimenting with Spanish.  I desire to / /communicate not just the nuts and bolts of the language, but its practical use / /in everyday life. / /

/ /

/ / In this second year of high school Spanish, the students will / /build on their earlier foundation of Spanish 1 skills as they broaden their / /ability to communicate. They are one step closer to becoming fluent. This is an / /exciting year for your student because he begins to see the effort of the first / /year begin to pay off. Homework will be about 5 hours per week (this does not / /include time needed to memorize words).

/ /

/ /      *  Students will learn to apply / /and refine their grammar and vocabulary skills.

/ /

/ /

     *  Students will journal about / /their day-to-day life in Spanish.

/ /

     *  Students will be assigned major / /grade projects though oral presentation.

/ /

     *  Students will use the internet / /for: quizzes, workbook & textbook exercises, listening activities, flash

/ /

         cards, and / /games.

/ /

     *  Students will participate in an / /interactive video series.

/ /

     *  Students will play fun and / /engaging games in-class and online.
